Craving pizza? Don’t want to eat outside? Want to make pizza for your kids? Well, here we are with the simple pizza dough recipe from scratch.
Finding the perfect pizza is not easy, at least for our family (hahahahaha). So, we started baking pizza at home for ourselves, and once we had a foolproof recipe, we began serving it to friends at our house parties. The best thing was that everyone loved the pizzas and always motivated me to bake more and pursue it professionally.
It’s time to dig into the recipe. Let’s start –
What You Need
- ¾ cup – Warm water
- 1 teaspoon – Active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon – Honey
- 1 cup – All-purpose flour
- 1 cup – Whole wheat flour
- 1 teaspoon -Salt
Step 1
First, take lukewarm water in a cup and add honey to it. Next, add yeast in it to activate it. In a bowl, add all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour and salt. Let’s start the kneading. It is the tricky part! You can start mixing it with the spoon and then use your hands to fold it. Your hands may feel stickier than usual during a kneading process. Use oil to make the process a little smoother.
Step 2
Once your dough looks ready to rest, keep it in a warm place. The dough rise time will depend on the room temperature. Well, it takes 2-3 hours to rise at room temperature. But in winters it varies sometimes. So, check if you need to put the dough in the oven (without turning it ON) for more warmth.
Step 3
Punch the dough again after 3 hours. If you don’t want to bake pizza immediately, you can refrigerate the dough for 2-3 days. Well, if you are ready to bake, start rolling the pizza. Experts use their hands to shape it; you can try that too. I prefer using a rolling pin to flatten it and using lots of flour to make sure it doesn’t stick. Place the rolled pizza on the pizza screen mesh before you start decorating it with sauce, veggies and mozzarella.
First, I spread pizza sauce (I prefer the spicy one), then some vegetables, paneer/meat (optional) and finally mozzarella cheese on top.
Step 4
Your pizza is ready to go in the oven. Bake it at 450°F (230°C) for 15-20 minutes. Serve it hot.

Tips to Remember
- Make sure yeast is fresh.
- Use luke warm water, not very hot or cold.
- Use good quality mozzarella cheese. I used freshly made mozzarella cheese from a local vendor.
- Making dough can be tricky. So, you can mix the dough with a spoon first and then use some oil to fold the dough with your hands.
- Use the pizza screen mesh to bake the pizza as shown in the pictures.
- Don’t knead the dough for too long. It is okay if it doesn’t look perfect. The stretching technique works better for pizza dough.
Questions You May Ask
Can we use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour?
Yes, you can replace the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. But I suggest equal parts of whole wheat and all-purpose flour is a better idea. For kids, you can try only whole wheat pizza dough.
Which yeast to use? Active yeast or instant yeast.
You can use any yeast – Active or Instant. Active yeast needs warm water to activate it. On the other hand, you can put instant yeast directly into the flour, and it doesn’t need to be activated.
Can you knead the pizza dough with your hand?
Yes, definitely, you can knead the dough with your hands. It is a bit messy to knead with your hands, but if you have a stand mixer, then use it.
Can I bake pizza without a pizza screen mesh?
Yes, you can bake pizza on the baking sheets/pans directly without using mesh. Use parchment paper on the bottom to make sure the pizza doesn’t stick to the pan.
We love to eat pizza at least once every week. This is the whole wheat pizza dough recipe that we follow to serve all our family and friends.
Baking pizza seems overwhelming. Once you start doing it, you can’t go back to outside pizzas.
